Michael Phelps – Master of the Universe?
On Sunday, the US Olympic trials for swimming began in Omaha, Nebraska. It should be no surprise to anyone that Michael Phelps already has broken a world record, swimming the 400-meter individual medley in 4 minutes 5.25 seconds. Not only did Michael Phelps break a world record, but he broke HIS OWN world record, by just under 1 second, which was previously set at last year’s world championships in Australia. I must mention that Phelps was wearing the Speedo LZR that I wrote about previously. But lets face it – Phelps is going to win with or without a swimsuit; he could be swimming naked and it wouldn’t make a difference.
Phelps has the potential to break Mark Spitz’s seven gold record set at the 1972 Olympics. In Beijing, he is going for 8 gold medals. He could’ve gone for 9, but dropped out of Saturday’s 400-meter freestyle. To give you a little background on Phelps, he was born in 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland. He currently is training at the University of Michigan, due to his coaches move there. Phelps has set the following records:
-Won seven gold medals, shattered five world records at the 2007 World Championships
-20-time World Record Holder
-17-time World Champion
-Three-time Olympic record holder
-6-time gold medalist at 2006 U.S. Nationals
-3-time gold medalist at 2005 U.S. Nationals
-5-time gold medalist at 2005 World Championships
-6 gold and 2 bronze medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens
Whew! There are more to write but I think I’ll stop there. Seriously folks, this is one Olympian that you shouldn’t miss. Check out the U.S. Time Trials this week for a tune-up before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
